I correlate Karen Horney's idea of the "Real Self" with the Jungian idea of the "Self." Jung said that we have a part of us, our core Self, that strives to transcend the everyday concerns of the ego. The Self is interested in pursuing deeper meaning, primarily through spiritual, religious, and philosophical means.

What is important for me is that what Karen Horney called the Real Self, and Jung called the Self, both relate to Peter Levine's idea of resourcing as a way to deal with trauma. When we access the knowledge of our Real Self (Self), we connect with our intuitive understanding about what is right for us and open ourselves to centered and balanced energy (versus the rigidity and stuck energy associated with trauma).
