In the last few posts, I have been focusing on trauma recovery and the need to have "resources" as trauma-energy is slowly discharged. The resources can be inner (e.g., positive self talk, sense of being ok/safe within your own body, etc) or external (e.g., feeling interconnected with things outside yourself, communicating with God, etc.). This resourcing is vital to deal not only with trauma, but the chaotic and de-centering nature of everyday life.

The post-Freudian theorist, Karen Horney, coined the term "Real Self," to refer to the part of us that contains our inner potentialities. Our Real Self is who we would be under relatively optimal family and life circumstances. Our Real Self provides us with wisdom about what is good for us, and also provides a place of sanctuary. Our Real Self provides a place of renewal and guidance in the midst of everyday life.
